Village Hall
Upwell Hall was originally constucted in the middle of the 19th century and over periods of time the hall has been in both public and private ownership. In 1996 Upwell Parish Council became concerned that the hall was being run down by the then private owner who had given up the hall as a going concern.
The council agreed a one-year peppercorn rent for the building and set about seeing if the hall could be made to pay its way. After that year the council was convinced that the hall had a viable future and agreed to purchase the hall. A voluntary committee was then set up being formed from representatives of the Parish Council and other groups who could or were currently using the hall.
Over the next few years, through a combination of fund raising events and lots of voluntary work by the committee and others, the hall was turned into a sought after venue for local events. That still continues and the hall is now self sufficient with income covering all the overheads and still leaving a small profit to help fund improvements. Over the years the committee has funded considerable work on the hall both inside and out.
In 2005 the windows in the main hall were reinstated and specially commissioned stained glass panes were installed in each top section. The images chosen all denote an activity or place, which have special significance for the parish. Events have proved that the decision of the council to buy the hall was a good one both in financial terms and through the fact that it has provided parishioners with an amenity used by all sections of our community and the envy of other parishes.
