St. Peters Church
Upwell Church has its origins in the 13th Century although it was added to in both the 14th and I5th centuries and was extensively renovated in the 19th Century.
Recent archeological evidence suggests that there has been Christian worship on the site since Roman times.
It has an unusual tower resembling a miniature cathedral and inside there are twenty five carved oak angels from the 13th century looking down from the alternating tiebeam and hammerbeam roof. It also boasts a richly decorated stained glass window illustrative of scripture history that was installed in 1912. The stone font is from the 15th century and there is a working set of bells in the tower, which are still played regularly today.
The parish of Upwell St Peter is in the Wisbech deanery of the Diocese of Ely. *
