Open Gardens ~ Charity Event
Calling All Gardeners in Upwell!
We want to revive Open Gardens Sunday and for this we need open gardens!
We have chosen Sunday June 29th 2008 to coincide with St. Peter’s Church Patronal Festival when the church will be full of flowers, and would love to make this a wonderfully festive day for the whole village.
Last year, while running the Villages in Bloom competition, I became aware of how popular and successful ‘open gardens’ was in the village a few years ago. I also realised how much keen gardeners enjoy sharing their beautiful creations with others – it’s hard work, so why not ‘show and tell’ for everyone’s benefit.
We plan to sell tickets and divide any money we make between MAGPAS, a charity from which any of our families could benefit at any time; GREENFINGERS, a charity which creates gardens for children’s hospices; and ST. PETER’S CHURCH. The event is being planned by a small group representative of the village generally, the Parish Council, The PCC and Greenfingers Gardening Club.
So if you live in Upwell, enjoy gardening and are willing to open your garden on Sunday 29th June please contact me, Sylvie Short, by phone or email (see below) as soon as possible, but by 31st of March at the very latest. If you would like to hold a fund raising happening in your garden at the same time – tombola, teas, Pimms, plant sales, etc – so much the better, let me know at the same time.
It may be that, as you read this, you can think of friends who have a lovely garden; don’t let them hide their light under a plant pot but persuade them to share their little Eden with others! And size really doesn’t matter; we saw excellent and very aesthetically pleasing small gardens while judging last year’s competition.
I am crossing my not-particularly-green fingers and hoping to hear from you.
Sylvie Short.
